Linux server and systems administration

The part nobody sees: the network, the servers, the databases and the backups. I build and maintain it so that losing a line or a server leaves nobody without service.

What I do

Mostly Debian and Ubuntu, on your own servers, dedicated servers or in the cloud.

Networks

High-availability routers, several internet lines with automatic failover, VPNs between sites and Wi-Fi with managed access points.

Servers and virtualisation

Virtualisation with Proxmox, replicated storage and backups that are tested: a backup that has not been tested is not a backup.

Clustered databases

Clustered databases and caches with load balancing, so losing a server goes unnoticed.

Monitoring

Status dashboard with a live network map, history and alerts.

Emergency access

A way in over 4G and a serial console for when everything else is down.

Security

Company password manager, inventory of everything connected and network audits, industrial ones too, without touching the equipment.

Server maintenance

Updates and patches, firewalls, SSH with keys only and over VPN, and tuning nginx, PHP-FPM and databases so your sites fly.

Google Workspace

Command-line administration and audits of users and permissions.

Who it is for

Situations where I usually come in.

  • Organisations with several sites and services that cannot go down.
  • Companies with an inherited server that nobody really understands.
  • Agencies and developers who want to hand over their clients’ servers.
  • Growing projects that need more performance or more than one server, or to switch provider without downtime.

How I work

The same principles, applied to your servers.

  1. 1

    I read first

Before changing anything, I understand how what already works is built.

  2. 2

    Proposal

What I will do, how it can fail and how to undo it. Nothing is applied without your approval.

  3. 3

    Execution

Changes with a prior backup, one at a time and checked.

  4. 4

    Follow-up

Dated change log, documentation and continuous monitoring.

Projects

Some real work: what the problem was, how it was solved and what changed.

Infrastructure that keeps running

An organisation with several sites and services that cannot go down.

The challenge
Making sure a failed line or server leaves nobody without service.
The solution
Redundant routers, several lines with automatic failover, clustered databases, virtualisation with verified backups and a dashboard with the live network status. For emergencies, access over 4G.
The result
If a line or server goes down, service continues and the dashboard reports what happened.

Demand peaks without downtime

A venue with high-demand events.

The challenge
Opening ticket sales without the website going down, and validating at the gate even when the mobile network is saturated.
The solution
A virtual waiting room in front of the website and an access app that validates at each gate even without coverage and, when online, instantly alerts the others.
The result
Sales hold up under the peak and entry to the venue keeps flowing.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work remotely?

Yes: the work is done over SSH through a management VPN, so it does not matter where the server is.

Do you also handle the network, not just the servers?

Yes: routers, several lines with automatic failover, VPNs between sites and managed Wi-Fi, with MikroTik, pfSense, OpenWrt or Huawei.

Can you take over a server someone else set up?

Yes. The first step is a review: what is there, what is out of date and what risks it has. From that I propose a plan.

What happens in an emergency?

Response times for outages or intrusions are agreed in advance, so you know what to expect when you need it.
